Religious Educaton
What we teach, why we teach it, and how it helps every child grow.
Our intent
Inspiring faith, curiosity and understanding
At Weeton St Michael's, we believe that Religious Education is an essential part of helping children understand themselves, others and the world around them. Rooted in our Christian vision and values, we aim to inspire curiosity, encourage thoughtful questioning and develop respect for different beliefs and worldviews.
Through the Blackburn Diocese Questful RE curriculum, children develop a secure understanding of Christianity while exploring other major religions and non-religious worldviews. Our enquiry-based approach encourages pupils to ask big questions, reflect on their own ideas and consider the beliefs and experiences of others.
We want every child to develop religious literacy, empathy and an appreciation of diversity, leaving Weeton as a thoughtful, respectful and compassionate individual who is confident in exploring life's important questions.

Implementation
How we teach it
Our RE curriculum follows Questful RE, the Blackburn Diocesan Board of Education syllabus. This enquiry-based approach encourages children to explore challenging questions about faith, beliefs, values and the meaning of life.
Christianity is studied in depth, helping children develop an understanding of the Bible, the life and teachings of Jesus, Christian beliefs and God's Big Story. Alongside this, pupils explore other major religions and worldviews, recognising similarities, differences and the ways faith influences people's lives.
Learning is carefully sequenced from Reception to Year 6 and adapted to our mixed-age classes. Through stories, religious texts, artefacts, discussion, reflection and creative activities, children build their religious knowledge and develop the skills to question, interpret and explain their understanding.
Our close relationship with St Michael's Church enriches our Christian ethos and provides meaningful opportunities for children to encounter Christian faith and traditions. RE encourages children to think deeply, appreciate different perspectives and develop respect for people of all faiths and none.
Every child can achieve in RE
We believe every child can succeed in Religious Education. Lessons provide a welcoming, inclusive environment where all pupils feel valued and confident to explore beliefs, ask questions and share their ideas.
Teaching is adapted to meet individual needs through discussion, visual resources, storytelling and practical activities. Children are encouraged to listen respectfully, reflect thoughtfully and develop their own understanding without feeling pressured to hold particular beliefs.
The impact
How we know it is working
By the end of their time at Weeton St Michael's, children will have developed secure knowledge of Christianity and an understanding of other religions and worldviews.
Pupils will be able to ask meaningful questions, discuss religious beliefs and practices, and explain their ideas using appropriate vocabulary. They will demonstrate respect, empathy and an appreciation of different perspectives, recognising the importance of faith and values in people's lives.
Teachers assess learning through questioning, discussion, reflection, creative responses and written work. Regular opportunities to revisit key concepts help children deepen their understanding and build upon previous learning.
Each term the subject leader will
- Monitor pupils' work
- Interview pupils
- Evaluate assessments and identify trends
- Conduct a learning walk
Standards of teaching and learning in RE are monitored by the subject leader and the headteacher. We review and develop the curriculum on an annual basis.
What children learn
National Curriculum expectations by key stage
Early Years Foundation Stage
In Reception, children begin exploring faith, beliefs and celebrations through stories, discussion, play and practical experiences.
Through Questful RE, they learn about Christian celebrations such as Harvest, Christmas and Easter, explore stories about Jesus and discover why people of faith have special times of celebration.
Children also explore kindness, belonging, family and what makes people special. These experiences encourage curiosity, reflection and respect for others.
Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1, children develop their understanding of Christianity and begin exploring the beliefs and practices of people from different faiths.
Through Questful RE enquiries, pupils investigate important religious stories, celebrations, prayer, sacred texts and places of worship. They explore questions such as why Jesus is special, why Christians celebrate Christmas and Easter, and why prayer and sacred places matter to people of faith.
Children develop their ability to ask questions, recognise similarities and differences, and explain their understanding using appropriate religious vocabulary.
Lower Key Stage 2
In lower Key Stage 2, pupils become increasingly fluent with whole numbers and the four operations, including number facts and the concept of place value. This ensures that pupils develop efficient written and mental methods and perform calculations accurately with increasingly large whole numbers.
Pupils develop their ability to solve a range of problems, including those involving simple fractions and decimal place value. Teaching also ensures that pupils draw with increasing accuracy and develop mathematical reasoning, so they can analyse shapes and their properties and confidently describe the relationships between them. It ensures they can use measuring instruments with accuracy and make connections between measures and number.
By the end of Year 4, pupils should have memorised their multiplication tables up to and including the 12 times table, and should show precision and fluency in their work.
Pupils are immersed in mathematical vocabulary, which they should be able to spell correctly and confidently, using their growing word knowledge and their knowledge of spelling.
Upper Key Stage 2
In Upper Key Stage 2, children develop a deeper and more thoughtful understanding of Christianity, other religions and non-religious worldviews.
Through increasingly challenging enquiries, pupils explore questions about faith, morality, identity, belonging and the influence of religion on individuals and communities.
Children learn to analyse religious teachings, compare different perspectives and explain their ideas using evidence and appropriate vocabulary.
By the end of Year 6, pupils are encouraged to think critically, reflect on their own beliefs and values, and demonstrate respect and understanding towards people of all faiths and none.
Our whole-school curriculum vision
At Weeton St Michael's C of E Primary School, our vision is to provide our children with a high-quality, inclusive education inspired by Christian values. Excellent teaching and learning form the basis of all our work, delivered through a caring, creative ethos.
Our children are encouraged to have a positive attitude, develop resilience in their approach to learning, become confident in their own ability, and be independent and motivated to achieve their full potential.
We believe it is our duty to make learning fun, engaging, memorable, accessible and ambitious for all children, instilling in them a love of learning.
We take seriously our duty to teach children about the fundamental British values of mutual respect and tolerance, democracy, the rule of law and individual liberty. These values are woven through our curriculum so that our learners leave us prepared for life in modern Britain.
