PSHE
What we teach, why we teach it, and how it helps every child grow.
Our intent
Developing happy, healthy and responsible individuals
At Weeton St Michael's, we believe that Personal, Social, Health and Economic education is essential in helping children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to lead happy, healthy and fulfilling lives.
Through the SCARF programme, we provide a carefully sequenced curriculum that develops children's emotional wellbeing, relationships, physical health, personal safety and understanding of the wider world.
Our PSHE curriculum reflects our Christian values, encouraging kindness, respect, resilience and responsibility. We aim to equip children with the confidence to make informed choices, celebrate differences, develop positive relationships and become thoughtful, responsible members of society.

Implementation
How we teach it
Our PSHE curriculum follows SCARF, a structured programme developed by Coram Life Education. Learning is carefully sequenced from Reception to Year 6, with our mixed-age classes following a two-year teaching cycle to ensure progression and comprehensive coverage.
SCARF is organised into six key units taught throughout the year:
Me and My Relationships – Developing positive relationships, understanding feelings and building friendships.
Valuing Difference – Celebrating diversity, showing respect and recognising the importance of kindness.
Keeping Safe – Understanding risks, personal safety and responsible behaviour, including online safety.
Rights and Respect – Exploring responsibilities, caring for others, managing money and contributing to our communities.
Being My Best – Developing healthy lifestyles, resilience, confidence and personal aspirations.
Growing and Changing – Understanding how our bodies, feelings and relationships change as we grow.
Lessons encourage discussion, reflection, teamwork and decision-making through age-appropriate activities. Children are supported to share their ideas, develop empathy and apply their learning to real-life situations.
Our PSHE curriculum also supports Relationships and Health Education, helping children develop the knowledge and confidence to stay safe, build positive relationships and manage the challenges of growing up.
Every child can achieve in PSHE
We believe that every child should feel valued, respected and included. PSHE lessons provide a safe, supportive environment where children can explore feelings, discuss important issues and develop their confidence.
Teaching is adapted to meet individual needs, ensuring that all pupils can participate, express themselves appropriately and develop the skills needed to make positive choices.
The impact
How we know it is working
By the end of their time at Weeton St Michael's, children will have developed the confidence, knowledge and life skills needed to make positive choices, maintain healthy relationships and manage their wellbeing.
Pupils will demonstrate kindness, respect, resilience and an understanding of their responsibilities towards themselves and others. They will recognise how to stay safe, seek help when needed and respond positively to challenges and change.
Teachers assess learning through discussions, questioning, reflection and observation. Regular opportunities to revisit important themes help children build confidence and apply their learning to everyday situations.
Each term the subject leader will
- Monitor pupils' work
- Interview pupils
- Evaluate assessments and identify trends
- Conduct a learning walk
Standards of teaching and learning in PSHE are monitored by the subject leader and the headteacher. We review and develop the curriculum on an annual basis.
What children learn
National Curriculum expectations by key stage
Early Years Foundation Stage
In Reception, children develop the foundations of personal, social and emotional wellbeing through the six SCARF themes.
They explore friendships, feelings, kindness and what makes them special. Children learn to recognise similarities and differences, understand how to keep themselves safe and identify trusted adults who can help them.
Through stories, play and practical activities, children also develop an understanding of healthy routines, caring for others and how people grow and change.
Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1, children build their understanding of friendships, feelings, respect and personal responsibility.
Through our two-year SCARF cycle, pupils learn about bullying, celebrating differences, personal safety, healthy lifestyles and recognising safe and unsafe situations, including online.
Children also explore managing money, caring for their environment, becoming more independent and understanding how their bodies and feelings change as they grow.
Lower Key Stage 2
In lower Key Stage 2, pupils become increasingly fluent with whole numbers and the four operations, including number facts and the concept of place value. This ensures that pupils develop efficient written and mental methods and perform calculations accurately with increasingly large whole numbers.
Pupils develop their ability to solve a range of problems, including those involving simple fractions and decimal place value. Teaching also ensures that pupils draw with increasing accuracy and develop mathematical reasoning, so they can analyse shapes and their properties and confidently describe the relationships between them. It ensures they can use measuring instruments with accuracy and make connections between measures and number.
By the end of Year 4, pupils should have memorised their multiplication tables up to and including the 12 times table, and should show precision and fluency in their work.
Pupils are immersed in mathematical vocabulary, which they should be able to spell correctly and confidently, using their growing word knowledge and their knowledge of spelling.
Upper Key Stage 2
In Upper Key Stage 2, children develop the confidence and independence needed to navigate increasingly complex social situations and prepare for secondary education.
Our two-year SCARF cycle explores positive relationships, emotional wellbeing, prejudice, personal safety, responsible decision-making, financial awareness and healthy lifestyles.
Children develop their understanding of online risks, digital footprints, misinformation and artificial intelligence. They also learn about managing change, puberty, body image and self-esteem, with additional age-appropriate sex education content included for Year 6.
By the end of Year 6, pupils are encouraged to make informed choices, recognise their responsibilities and approach the next stage of their lives with confidence and resilience.
Our whole-school curriculum vision
At Weeton St Michael's C of E Primary School, our vision is to provide our children with a high-quality, inclusive education inspired by Christian values. Excellent teaching and learning form the basis of all our work, delivered through a caring, creative ethos.
Our children are encouraged to have a positive attitude, develop resilience in their approach to learning, become confident in their own ability, and be independent and motivated to achieve their full potential.
We believe it is our duty to make learning fun, engaging, memorable, accessible and ambitious for all children, instilling in them a love of learning.
We take seriously our duty to teach children about the fundamental British values of mutual respect and tolerance, democracy, the rule of law and individual liberty. These values are woven through our curriculum so that our learners leave us prepared for life in modern Britain.
