English
What we teach, why we teach it, and how it helps every child grow.
Our intent
Inspiring a lifelong love of reading and writing
At Weeton St Michael's C of E Primary School, we believe that English is at the heart of every child's education. Reading, writing and spoken language are essential skills that enable children to communicate confidently, express their ideas, develop their imagination and access the wider curriculum.
Our ambition is to develop enthusiastic, fluent readers and confident, independent writers who take pride in their achievements. We want every child to discover the enjoyment of reading, experience a rich variety of high-quality literature and develop a love of language that will stay with them throughout their lives.
Through an ambitious, inclusive and carefully sequenced curriculum, we ensure that children build secure foundations in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and handwriting. Our curriculum is supported by the Literacy Counts programmes Ready Steady Read, Ready Steady Write, Ready Steady Spell and Ready Steady Handwrite.
We recognise that every child is unique and that children develop at different rates. Our teaching is adapted to meet individual needs, providing appropriate support and challenge so that all pupils can achieve their potential. In keeping with our Christian values, we encourage children to listen respectfully, share their ideas thoughtfully and develop the confidence to use their voices positively.
Our ultimate aim is for children to leave Weeton St Michael's as capable, enthusiastic and reflective communicators, equipped with the literacy skills they need for secondary school and beyond.

Implementation
How we teach it
Children are taught in line with the National Curriculum objectives for their year group. Teachers use a mastery approach, and children learn how to tackle mathematical questions in a series of different ways and representations. Children take part in daily maths lessons with access to a range of resources, including an area in class where they can independently choose their own.Our English curriculum is carefully planned and sequenced to ensure that children progressively develop their knowledge and skills from Reception to Year 6. Teaching follows the requirements of the National Curriculum and is adapted to meet the needs of our mixed-age classes, ensuring that learning builds securely on what children already know.
Reading – Ready Steady Read
Reading is central to our curriculum. Through Ready Steady Read, children explore a rich range of high-quality fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Carefully structured lessons develop reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, enabling pupils to retrieve information, make inferences, explain their understanding, predict outcomes and discuss authors' choices. We promote reading for pleasure and encourage children to develop their own interests and preferences as readers.
Writing – Ready Steady Write
We use Ready Steady Write to provide an engaging, ambitious and progressive approach to writing. High-quality children's literature inspires meaningful writing opportunities and exposes pupils to rich vocabulary, different genres and a range of authors.
Learning follows a clear sequence of immersing children in a text, analysing language and writing techniques, planning ideas and producing their own writing. Through teacher modelling, shared writing, oral rehearsal and independent practice, children develop the confidence to write for a variety of purposes and audiences. Grammar, punctuation and sentence construction are taught explicitly and applied within meaningful writing contexts.
Spelling – Ready Steady Spell
Ready Steady Spell provides a systematic and progressive approach to spelling from Year 2 to Year 6, building upon children's early phonics knowledge. Pupils explore spelling patterns, rules, word structures, prefixes, suffixes and word origins. Regular opportunities to revisit and apply learning help children develop accurate spelling and the strategies needed to become increasingly independent writers.
Handwriting – Ready Steady Handwrite
We use Ready Steady Handwrite to develop fluent, legible and increasingly automatic handwriting. Children are taught correct letter formation, appropriate pencil control and, as they progress, consistent letter joins. Explicit modelling, regular practice and feedback help children develop efficient handwriting habits so that they can concentrate on the content and quality of their writing.
Every child can succeed in English
We believe that every child can become a successful reader, writer and communicator. Our teaching provides ambitious learning opportunities for all pupils while recognising individual starting points and needs.
Teachers use ongoing assessment to identify misconceptions, address gaps in knowledge and provide additional support or challenge where appropriate. Carefully chosen texts, vocabulary instruction, teacher modelling and scaffolded activities ensure that learning is accessible and engaging.
Our mixed-age approach allows us to build upon prior knowledge while maintaining high expectations. We celebrate individual achievements and encourage children to develop resilience, independence and confidence in their English learning.
The impact
How we know it is working
The impact of our English curriculum is reflected in the confidence, enthusiasm and progress of our pupils. We aim for children to develop secure knowledge and skills in reading, writing and spoken language, enabling them to communicate effectively and apply their learning across the curriculum.
As children progress through school, we expect them to demonstrate increasing fluency and understanding in reading, greater independence and creativity in writing, and growing accuracy in spelling, grammar, punctuation and handwriting. Children should be able to discuss texts thoughtfully, explain their choices as writers and take pride in the quality of their work.
Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning. Teachers regularly evaluate pupils' understanding through classroom discussions, reading activities, written outcomes, spelling assessments and ongoing observations. This information is used to identify strengths, address misconceptions and plan appropriate next steps.
We use relevant statutory assessments alongside teacher assessment to evaluate progress and attainment. Where children require additional support, targeted teaching and intervention help them to consolidate essential knowledge and skills.
Our aspiration is that children leave Weeton St Michael's as enthusiastic readers, skilled writers and confident communicators, well prepared for the next stage of their education and equipped with a lasting love of language and literature.
Each term the subject leader will
- Monitor pupils' work
- Interview pupils
- Evaluate assessments and identify trends
- Conduct a learning walk
The quality of teaching and learning in English is monitored by the subject leader and senior leadership team. Curriculum planning, assessment information, pupil outcomes and staff professional development are reviewed regularly to ensure that our English provision remains ambitious, inclusive and effective.
What children learn
National Curriculum expectations by key stage
Early Years Foundation Stage
Communication and Language
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, communication and language form the foundations of successful learning. Children develop their listening, attention, understanding and speaking skills through stories, rhymes, songs, role play, conversations and purposeful interactions.
We encourage children to develop their vocabulary, ask questions, share experiences and communicate their ideas confidently.
Literacy
Children begin their journey towards becoming readers and writers through enjoyable, purposeful experiences with books, stories, sounds, letters and words.
Early reading skills are developed through systematic phonics teaching, storytelling and opportunities to explore a wide range of books. Children learn to recognise letters and sounds, blend sounds to read words and begin to understand what they read.
Early writing develops through mark-making, fine motor activities, letter formation and opportunities to communicate meaning through words and sentences. Children are supported to develop the physical skills, confidence and knowledge needed for writing.
In Practice
Our Reception children experience a language-rich learning environment where reading, writing, speaking and listening are woven throughout adult-led activities and continuous provision.
High-quality stories provide opportunities for discussion, imaginative play, vocabulary development and early writing. Ready Steady Write and Ready Steady Handwrite support the development of writing skills, while regular phonics teaching builds the foundations for early reading and spelling.
Through meaningful and engaging experiences, children develop the confidence and enthusiasm needed for their continuing English journey.
Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1, children continue to develop the essential foundations of reading, writing and spoken language.
Reading focuses on securing phonics knowledge, accurate word reading, increasing fluency and developing comprehension. Children learn to discuss stories, retrieve information, make simple inferences and explain their understanding of fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
Through Ready Steady Write, children explore high-quality texts and develop their ability to compose sentences and create increasingly detailed pieces of writing. They learn to organise ideas, use appropriate vocabulary and apply taught grammar and punctuation accurately.
Spelling develops from children's phonics knowledge, with Ready Steady Spell introduced in Year 2 to support the understanding and application of spelling patterns and rules.
Through Ready Steady Handwrite, pupils develop correct letter formation, consistent sizing and spacing, and the foundations of fluent handwriting.
By the end of Key Stage 1, our aim is for children to read with increasing confidence, write simple texts independently and communicate their ideas clearly.
Lower Key Stage 2
In lower Key Stage 2, pupils become increasingly fluent with whole numbers and the four operations, including number facts and the concept of place value. This ensures that pupils develop efficient written and mental methods and perform calculations accurately with increasingly large whole numbers.
Pupils develop their ability to solve a range of problems, including those involving simple fractions and decimal place value. Teaching also ensures that pupils draw with increasing accuracy and develop mathematical reasoning, so they can analyse shapes and their properties and confidently describe the relationships between them. It ensures they can use measuring instruments with accuracy and make connections between measures and number.
By the end of Year 4, pupils should have memorised their multiplication tables up to and including the 12 times table, and should show precision and fluency in their work.
Pupils are immersed in mathematical vocabulary, which they should be able to spell correctly and confidently, using their growing word knowledge and their knowledge of spelling.
Upper Key Stage 2
In Upper Key Stage 2, children develop the advanced reading, writing and communication skills needed for a successful transition to secondary education.
Through Ready Steady Read, pupils explore increasingly complex and challenging texts. They develop their ability to make detailed inferences, evaluate information, compare texts, identify themes and analyse the effect of language, structure and authorial choices. Children are encouraged to express their opinions confidently and support their interpretations with evidence.
Ready Steady Write enables children to produce increasingly sophisticated writing across a wide range of genres, purposes and audiences. Pupils learn to select precise vocabulary, control sentence structures, organise ideas cohesively and use grammar and punctuation for clarity and effect. Greater emphasis is placed on planning, drafting, editing and improving writing independently.
Ready Steady Spell continues to develop secure spelling knowledge through the exploration of complex patterns, word origins and morphology. Children apply spelling strategies independently and develop accuracy across the curriculum.
Through Ready Steady Handwrite, pupils refine their handwriting to ensure that it is fluent, legible and efficient, enabling them to write confidently and at an appropriate pace.
By the end of Year 6, we aim for every child to be an enthusiastic, capable reader, a confident and purposeful writer, and an articulate communicator who is prepared for the opportunities and challenges of the next stage of education.
